It is with a heavy heart that I just found out that Tom Petty, singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and front man for his band,The Heartbreakers has died after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu,California and being taken off of life support.I am a BIG time fan of his music beginning when I first heard his hit single,”Refugee” released in early January of 1980. His songs followed me as I grew older into adulthood and enjoyed his collaborations with Stevie Nicks on her first LP,”Bella Donna” with the hit single,”Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” and his contributions with George Harrison,Jeff Lynne,Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan as part of the supergroup,The Traveling Wilburys and their anthem,”Handle Me With Care” and “End Of The Line”. His death comes as a shock as I heard he was on tour recently and from every indication didn’t seem sickly but I guess nobody can REALLY know for sure. As a fan of his music,I saw his 2007 film documentary entitled,”Runnin’ Down A Dream” directed by Peter Bogdanovich and enjoyed finding out about his humbled beginnings in his hometown of Gainesville,Florida and his success with the band and by himself. I will have to look at it again to regain clarity on his life. When I first created this website/radio station I knew that musical artist that I grew up listening to would eventually pass on but I didn’t think it would effect me so deeply as it has. The best thing that I can say is we will ALWAYS have his music to remember him by and THAT is a good thing! RIP to a rocker who knew how to rock!
