In Memoriam-PETER TORK (1942-2019) guitarist, keyboards, songwriter and vocalist for 60’s Pop Icons The Monkees

Sadly we lost another music legend today as Peter Tork, guitarist, keyboard player, and background vocalist for the 60’s iconic musical group The Monkees passed away today just one week after his 77th Birthday from complications due to a rare form of cancer. Of course as most of you know The Monkees were NOT organically formed rather they were created by Hollywood TV producers at Screen Gems Productions as they were trying to re-create a TV/Americanized version of The Beatles. Hundreds of people applied for the newspaper ad in both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter magazines including future member of the group Buffalo Springfield and Crosby Stills and Nash(and Young) Stephen Stills. Producers of this new show Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson rejected Stills because of his looks. He later told his good friend Peter Tork and the rest is history. Soon The Monkees were formed along with bandnmates/c0-stars Mickey Dolenz,Davy Jones and Mike Nesmith. Combined with legendary record producer Don Kirshner and a massive songwriting team which included Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart,Neil Diamond and even band members Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork contributed to the song writing which included massive world wide hit singles such as Last Train To Clarksville,I’m A Believer,Valleri,A Little Bit Me,A Little Bit You,Daydream Believer,Pleasant Valley Sunday and many more only The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were close to them sales wise,in fact The Monkees were the #1 musical act in the world in the year 1967! Peter contributed a lot to the group musically as only he and Mike Nesmith were the only members of the group that were classically trained musically to play instruments. The fact that their first 2 albums they didn’t play hardly any instruments on their own, studio musicians played on all of their hit songs. It wasn’t until all four members demanded to play their own instruments or they would quit the band that they were allowed to play on their 3rd album,Headquarters released in May 1967 it became their 3rd of 4 number one albums and 4th of 5 Top Ten LP’s released from October 1966 to April 1968. Sadly their NBC television series which aired during prime time from September 1966 to March of 1968 for two seasons was cancelled. They won 2 Emmy Awards, one for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1967. The TV series broke new ground as being what many people saw as the fore-fathers to music videos as they would feature 2 new songs to the show with every episode. Although the show was cancelled by NBC the very next year CBS picked the show up and aired it on Saturday mornings where it was even more successful and it ran on Saturdays for years. It is here where I found them and fell in love with their show and their songs. In fact ALL four members of the group said that they were proud that the show aired during that time endeared them to a younger generation of music fans. By 1968 they filmed the motion picture Head, which didn’t do well at the box office. That and being tired of the constant touring and the industry as a whole, Peter resigned from the band in early 1969. The group would go on with just Nesmith,Jones and Dolenz but only until 1970 when Mike Nesmith left the band leaving only Micky and David and soon they decided to disband. Micky,Davy and Peter reunited in 1986 with a new Greatest Hits LP package complete with 3 new songs including “That Was Then,This Is Now”,which became their first Top 20 hit song in nearly twenty years. Actually only Peter and Micky participated in the recording but Davy Jones joined them in a 20 Year Reunion Tour. Peter did release a solo album,in 1994 titled Stranger Things Have Happened which bandmates Mike and Micky contributed on. Peter toured not only with The Monkees but with his own bands, The Peter Tork Project and Shoe Suede Blues. As recently as 2016 Peter toured with Micky and sometimes Mike playing all their hits and a segment during the concert that was dedicated to bandmate Davy Jones who sadly passed away in 2012. Peter leaves a legacy of legitimacy as far as the music of The Monkees are concerned. His most famous song that he wrote was entitled “For Pete’s Sake” which became the TV show’s closing theme during the show’s 2nd season. He will be missed not only by his bandmates but millions of Monkee fans around the world. RIP Peter……..FOR PETE’S SAKE.

My Review of ReMastered:The Two Killings of SAM COOKE Netflix Documentary

I just finished watching the new Netflix documentary,ReMastered:The Two Killings Of Sam Cooke and i thoroughly enjoyed it! The documentary reviews the life of legendary pop/R&B/gospel singer-songwriter Sam Cooke and came away re-educated on how I looked at not only how Sam died but how became a civil rights pioneer back when it was dangerous to do so. Few people know that Sam Cooke wrote the majority of the songs he sang and also he was the manager for a lot of rising 60’s R&B groups such as The Valentino’s. I won’t spoil the details but after looking at this provocative documentary, you’ll know the full meaning behind “Two Killings”! I’m looking forward to looking at more Netflix music documentaries! This is a MUST watch film!

The Return of T BONE’S Prime Cuts!! T-Bone is BACK!!!!

That’s right! After more than a year off the airwaves, one of radio’s BEST musical radio programs is coming back on the air! And it’s all attributed to the courage and strength of the mastermind behind T-Bone’s Prime Cuts,it’s creator and host/producer Terry Mathley. Terry created and hosted/produced T-Bone’s Prime Cuts for well over 8 years. Terry’s love for music is vast and pure, crazy and defined! His taste in music genres go from classic rock, pop, soul,R&B,blues, jazz, country, rap, folk music and everything in between! T-Bone’s show was based out of Indiana and aired on WICR-FM 88.7 in Indianapolis,Indiana for 8 1/2 years starting in 2010. Each Saturday starting at Midnight ET until 2:00 am,T-Bone would regal his vast listeners with songs from artists like Buck Owens one minute, and the VERY next song would be from RUN-D.M.C.,the next…Black Sabbath, then,Otis Redding,James Brown,Mahalia Jackson,The Archies,The Monkees,Thelonious Monk and so on and so forth. You never knew WHO he would play next! That was part of the hook to listening to his show, you just never knew what songs he would play NEXT! As you probably know about me,I began this station in April of 2017. Before I started I spent nearly a year researching on HOW I was going to present my station’s flagship program,as I knew the format was going to be a 70’s and 80’s music station. I was listening to other internet music radio shows and someone mentioned T-Bone’s show. After listening to just one show,I was mesmerized!! Not only did he have the most diversed playlist on radio, terrestrial OR internet but as I would coin his show,THE most ECLECTIC show on radio…PERIOD!!!” Not only that,he had a vast, dedicated listening audience all over the world…LITERALLY! The most unique aspect of his show was while the show was on the air,he would engage his listeners on Facebook LIVE answering questions about the artist, asking trivia questions and naming the artists, the name of the song, the LP and the year the song was released. I immediately became a HUGE fan of not only his show, his format but HIM as well. I reached out to Terry and told him of my dream to have not only my own radio station but my own music program. I asked him if I could use his show as a template for me to follow.(LOL,that’s a roundabout way of saying copying his show format) To my amazement, not only did he give me the OK,he helped me create the station,he helped produce some of my earliest shows, and recorded my shows for encore broadcasts which would be the genesis of our “THE BEST OF” shows which air each and every Thursday at 2 PM ET. He supported me each and every week listening to my shows and giving an honest opinion on how I did. He even promoted MY radio station and show while HIS show was on the air!! I cannot tell you the thrill I had when T-Bone first mentioned the show on the air! Many of you may not know this but Terry and I became true confidants and friends contacting each other nearly every day. But in my opinion, the MAIN thing that Terry gave me,in which I think is the BACKBONE of our show,TheREWIND is the idea of listeners following us live on Facebook during the show so the listeners could interact with me and my producer Holly Frye Orman with fun trivia and great memories which in MY opinion is the heartbeat of this station and our show! Terry didn’t have to do ANY of this but he did that and MORE! I can honestly say that you wouldn’t be viewing this blog OR listening to this station without Terry’s help and guidance! Sadly in 2017 Terry’s health started to decline, but even then he STILL pushed forward and did his radio shows every week. Unfortunately in early 2018 Terry had to have major surgery which meant he had to say goodbye to something he loved with a passion…his music and his radio show. Terry has had a very tough couple of years, but he kept on fighting the good fight and prayers from his friends and listeners and special assistance from his very good friend, singer songwriter and healthy lifestyle advocate Sherry King, truly an angel in spirit(you should hear one of her songs)he has come a LONG way,so much so that he is resuming his radio show and his music blog at http://tbpconline.com where you can find his music reviews, blogs and past musings and blogs from his old website. He will also be BACK on the air starting this and every Saturday afternoons from 1-3:00 PM ET on  http://dailyboom.net with The BEST of BONE, featuring vintage archived shows from T-Bone’s Prime Cuts! What’s in the future? Brand NEW shows coming soon from one of music’s GREATEST minds and and a true fighter with an indomitable spirit, a great big heart and a man that I can PROUDLY say is a my music BROTHER! My friend! I can’t wait to listen to you again on the airwaves,my BROTHER, it’s been lonely without you!
